To keep your skin healthy and balanced, it’s important to avoid these five common mistakes when washing your face:
Avoid water that’s too hot.
Hot or very warm water can strip the skin of its natural protective oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and a weakened skin barrier. Instead, use lukewarm water to cleanse your skin gently.
Be gentle—don’t scrub excessively.
Aggressive rubbing with rough towels, washcloths, or abrasive brushes can cause micro-injuries, redness, and irritation. Cleanse your face using gentle circular motions with your fingertips, then pat dry softly with a clean, soft towel.
Choose a cleanser suited to your skin type.
Overly harsh cleansers—such as bar soaps, body washes, or formulas containing sulfates—can disrupt the skin’s balance. Likewise, using a product that doesn’t match your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive, or combination) may be ineffective. For sensitive skin, mild, fragrance-free cleansers are generally recommended.
Wash your hands before touching your face.
Throughout the day, hands collect dirt, oil, and bacteria. Washing them before cleansing your face helps prevent transferring these impurities onto freshly cleaned skin.
Don’t skip moisturizing.
Cleansing removes impurities but can also strip away some of the skin’s natural moisture. Applying a moisturizer to slightly damp skin right after washing helps lock in hydration and maintain a healthy skin barrier.
